Functional Capacity Evaluation

What Is the Functional Capacity Evaluation or FCE?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an all-encompassing term to describe the physical assessment of an individual's ability to perform work- related activity. It can also be known as a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA), Physical Capacity Assessment or Evaluation (PCA or PCE), or Work Capacity Assessment or Evaluation (WCA or WCE). For the Functional Capacity Evaluation to be well-designed it should be comprehensive in terms of encompassing the physical demands of work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT.), have standardized instructions and operational definitions, be practical regarding space and length of time for administration, be objective in minimizing examiner bias, and, most importantly, be reliable and valid. An FCE must also be administered with care for the patient's safety and well-being, with due diligence to minimize the chance for injury during the course of the evaluation.

Functional Capacity Evaluation  or FCE Testing Includes:

  • Spinal and Extremity Range of Motion – Uses an inclinometer to analyze all motion and its limitations that can affect a person’s working abilities.
  • Static Strength (lifting in different postures) – Requires a person to stand on a platform and pull on an immovable pulley.
  • Hand and Finger Strength – Tests the grip strength of each hand.
  • Lifting Capacity – Challenges a person’s ability to lift 5, 10 and up to 100lbs of their lifting limit.
  • Method Times Measurement – Asks people to perform different tasks such as walking, climbing, crawling, etc. and compares their results to what is normal for a standard industrial worker.
  • Outcomes Assessments  – Standardized tests that help determine disability.
